Does CCTV work in the dark?

Yes. Modern CCTV cameras have built-in infrared (IR) LEDs that allow them to capture clear footage even in complete darkness. The cameras switch between colour daytime footage and black-and-white IR night vision automatically as light levels change - you do not need to do anything manually.

The 4K PoE cameras that Doberman installs have IR ranges of up to 30 metres, which is more than enough to cover a typical driveway, garden, or car park. In IR mode the image appears in black and white, but detail - faces, clothing, number plates - remains sharp and usable.

Some cameras also offer colour night vision using a built-in spotlight or by using ambient light from nearby street lamps or security lights. Colour footage at night can make it easier to identify clothing colours or vehicle details. However, IR night vision is the more reliable option because it does not depend on any external light source.

Night performance is one of the most important things to get right with CCTV. Cheap cameras with weak IR or low-resolution sensors produce grainy, washed-out footage after dark - exactly when you need clear images most. The cameras Doberman uses are specifically chosen for strong night performance at 4K resolution.

During the site survey, Doberman considers lighting conditions at each camera position and recommends the best camera placement and angle to get the clearest footage day and night. If needed, we can also pair cameras with motion-activated floodlights for added visibility and deterrence.
