The ADT Alternative You Own Outright

The Federation of Master Builders' review puts ADT's contracts at "between 24 and 36 months", and an authorised ADT agent publishes a 36-month term on its example package. On early exit, the FMB is blunt: the contract "cannot be cancelled without paying the full contract fee". That is the standard monitored-alarm trade: the kit and install are recovered through the monthly fee, so the term protects the provider's maths.

ADT UK does not publish its standard terms and conditions - copies of individual contracts are provided on request - so before signing, read the term length, the renewal and notice arrangements, and who owns the equipment at the end. Those are the clauses that decide what leaving costs.

ADT's own site offers "a free security assessment and a quote specific to your needs" rather than a price list, and the FMB lists its price range simply as "by quotation". The one published datapoint we can cite is an authorised ADT agent's example package: £32.99 a month on a 36-month term, with a £549 supplied-and-fitted install plus £52 police registration. That is one agent's example, not ADT's general pricing - the quote in front of you is the only figure that counts.

What the fee includes is genuinely substantial: 24/7/365 monitoring, an all-inclusive service and maintenance plan, battery replacements and accidental-damage cover, per ADT's own pages. The question to settle before signing is what happens to the equipment when the agreement ends - ownership arrangements are not published, so ask.

Under the national police policy on security systems, police respond to monitored alarms through a Unique Reference Number once an activation is confirmed, and response is withdrawn after three false calls in twelve months. That framework applies to ADT exactly as it does to every other provider - no brand can promise police attendance, and ADT's NSI Gold accreditation is part of meeting it.

Whatever system you choose, what helps after an incident is identifiable footage. An alarm detects; cameras evidence. They are different jobs, which is the honest heart of this whole comparison. Openreach is switching off the UK's analogue phone network (PSTN) on 31 January 2027, and its guidance expressly flags alarm systems among the services that need action. If an alarm - any brand's - signals over an analogue line, ask the provider what the digital upgrade path is and what it costs before the date, not after.

In 2021 a former technician at ADT's US operation pleaded guilty to secretly accessing around 200 customers' camera feeds more than 9,600 times over four and a half years, and was sentenced to 52 months in US federal prison. It was the US arm, ADT itself reported him, and no equivalent UK case exists - but it illustrates the structural point honestly: any monitored service involves third parties who can reach your system. Worth knowing on ownership: ADT UK's residential business is currently owned by Johnson Controls, which agreed in July 2026 to sell it to Australia's Intelligent Monitoring Group, expected to complete in the first half of 2027.
