What warehouse CCTV installation involves
Warehouses present challenges that standard commercial CCTV installations do not. High ceilings - typically 6 to 12 metres - mean cameras are mounted further from the floor, which reduces detail unless you select the right lens and resolution. Wide open floor areas of 5,000 square feet or more need cameras that can cover long distances without losing identification quality at the far end. The biggest mistake we see in existing warehouse installs is wide-angle cameras mounted at height - they give you a broad overview on the monitor but the footage is useless for identifying anyone beyond 10 metres.
We use a combination of varifocal and fixed-lens cameras depending on the area. Loading bays get dedicated cameras with wide dynamic range (WDR) to handle the extreme contrast between the dark interior and the bright opening when roller shutters are up. Floor area cameras use longer focal lengths to maintain detail across 20-30 metre spans. Perimeter cameras cover external boundaries, gates, and yard areas - typically with IR ranges of 50 metres or more. Each camera is selected and configured for its specific role, not pulled from a one-size-fits-all parts list.
Everything runs on PoE (Power over Ethernet) over Cat6 cable. In a warehouse environment, Wi‑Fi is not an option - steel structures, racking, and stock all cause signal interference. PoE gives you a single cable per camera carrying both power and data back to the NVR. Cable runs in warehouses are longer than typical commercial installs, so we plan routes through existing cable trays, along steel beams, and through trunking to keep the installation clean and protected. We provide a fixed quote after the site survey so you know exactly what the system costs before work begins.
Leicester industrial areas we cover
We install warehouse CCTV systems across Leicester industrial areas including Troon Way, Scudamore Road, Meridian Business Park, and the wider Leicestershire industrial estates. Troon Way and Scudamore Road units are typically steel-framed buildings with clear-span interiors - good for cable routing along the steel structure but challenging for camera mounting heights. We use heavy-duty brackets and junction boxes rated for industrial environments, not the lightweight fittings designed for office ceilings.
Meridian Business Park and the surrounding logistics parks house distribution centres and larger warehouses where camera counts are higher and cable runs are longer. We have installed systems in units ranging from 2,000 to 20,000 square feet across these estates. Magna Park and the logistics corridor along the M1 also fall within our coverage area. Each site gets an individual survey because warehouse layouts vary significantly - racking configurations, mezzanine floors, office partitions, and loading bay positions all affect camera placement. Our business CCTV installation page covers the full range of commercial premises we install across Leicester.
For multi-site warehouse operators, we design each system to work independently with its own on-site NVR, but configure remote access so you can monitor all sites from a single app. No cloud dependency - each site records locally and you access footage over your network.
Loading bays, perimeter, and goods tracking
Loading bays are a critical coverage area for any warehouse. They are where goods arrive and leave, where vehicle movements happen, and where theft and damage claims most often originate. We install dedicated loading bay cameras positioned to capture vehicle registration plates, the goods transfer area, and the roller shutter zone. WDR is essential here - the contrast between a dark warehouse interior and daylight through an open shutter will leave you with silhouettes on standard cameras. We select cameras with true WDR rated at 120dB or higher for every loading bay position.
Perimeter cameras cover external boundaries, access gates, yard areas, and any external storage. For sites with large yards or compound areas, we use long-range IR cameras - typically 50 to 80 metre IR range - mounted at height on building corners or pole mounts. These cameras cover the approaches to your site and capture vehicle movements in the yard. Combined with loading bay footage, this gives you a complete goods-in/goods-out record that satisfies both insurance and operational requirements.
Under UK GDPR, warehouse CCTV carries the same obligations as any business system - compliant signage, documented retention policy, and the ability to respond to subject access requests within one calendar month. We configure retention on your NVR to match your insurance requirements (typically 30 days) and provide ICO-compliant signage for all camera positions. For warehouses with staff areas, break rooms, and changing facilities, we design coverage to exclude these areas in line with ICO workplace surveillance guidance.
Pricing
Warehouse systems vary by site size, camera count, and cable run lengths. A typical 6-8 camera system for a mid-sized industrial unit starts from around 2,000 to 3,000 for hardware. Larger distribution centres with 12 or more cameras and perimeter coverage scale accordingly. Installation cost is higher than retail due to longer cable runs and mounting at height. We provide a fixed quote after the site survey.

Frequently asked questions
- How many cameras does a warehouse need?
- It depends on your floor area, layout, and coverage requirements. A mid-sized unit of 5,000-10,000 square feet typically needs 6-10 cameras covering the main floor, loading bays, entrances, and perimeter. Larger sites with multiple bays, mezzanines, or external yards need more. We confirm the exact count during the site survey.
- Can standard cameras cover a warehouse floor?
- Not effectively. Standard wide-angle cameras lose identification detail beyond about 10 metres. For warehouse distances of 20-30 metres or more, you need cameras with longer focal lengths or varifocal lenses and higher resolution sensors. We select cameras specifically for the distances in your building.
- How do you handle high ceiling mounting?
- We use heavy-duty brackets and junction boxes rated for industrial environments, mounted to steel beams or purlins. Camera angles are calculated for the mounting height to ensure footage quality is maintained at floor level. Night commissioning verifies IR performance across the full distance.
- What about loading bay camera challenges?
- The main challenge is contrast - a dark interior with bright daylight through an open shutter. Standard cameras produce silhouettes. We use cameras with true wide dynamic range (WDR) rated at 120dB or higher, which balances the exposure and captures detail in both the dark and light areas simultaneously.
- Can I monitor multiple warehouse sites from one app?
- Yes. Each site has its own NVR and records locally, but we configure remote access so you can view all your sites from a single mobile app or desktop client. No cloud subscription needed - you connect directly to each NVR over the network.
- Do warehouse CCTV systems need GDPR signage?
- Yes. Any business operating CCTV must display ICO-compliant signage, maintain a documented retention policy, and respond to Subject Access Requests within one month. We provide signage and configure retention as part of every installation. Staff areas like break rooms and changing facilities are excluded from coverage.
